Here are a few noteworthy entries:
Katie Melua performed 994 feet below sea level aboard an oil rig off the coast of Norway, whilst Madonna is the most successful female artist after The Confessions tour earned nearly £100 million.

The Rolling Stones had the world's most successful music tour with, A Bigger Bang, and Robbie Williams and David Bowie share the record for most albums to reach number one by a male artist.

Finally - and as usual - Irving Berlin's <a href='se/ID_No/52838/Product.aspx>White Christmas sung by Bing Crosby in 1942 is the biggest selling single, with at least 50 million copies sold.

The stars' riskiest years are when they first experience fame. The average death age of European rock stars dying young is 35 years old.

Around 25% die from drugs or alcohol. A warning to Pete Doherty (The Libertines) and Amy Winehouse! James Brown mentioned six children in his will, but DNA tests have now confirmed that he had at least another three children.
45 year old retired flight attendant LaRohonda Petitt was the first woman to prove that she was Brown's daughter, the result of a brief affair between Brown and her mother, who was at a Brown concert in the early 60s. The case initially delayed the singer's burial by two months and the recognised family members are still arguing over where his final resting place should be.

Elvis: 30 years marked by fans

It's 30 years since Elvis died on the 16th of August, 1977 at the age of 42. A soon-to-be-published book "The End: Jim Morrison," reveals new evidence that contradicts the general belief that Morrison died of heart failure in his bathtub. It is written by Sam Bernett, a nightclub manager at the time, who was involved in the tragic event.
The Doors sold over 40 million albums after introducing their short-lived career with the hit song Light My Fire (1967). Jim Morrison was only 27 years old when he died.

Back in December Noel stated that Green Day had stolen the arrangement from Oasis's "Wonderwall" for the song "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams", deflecting criticism of his own songwriting by saying he pays "people I steal from [the] courtesy" to wait until they're dead.

Noel has now gone on to criticise Thom Yorke (from Radiohead) of attempting to "sing the news" rather than pleasing fans by playing hit songs such as "Creep". Noel also stated "I never went to ... university. I don't know what a paint brush is". Thom replied on the Radiohead website, stating "i did. it taught me to respect other artists" (but not to use capital letters?)

Canadian indie-rockers Arcade Fire have also hit out at U2, Oasis and the Rolling Stones, indirectly accusing them of "manipulating people to buy music" and trying to be the biggest band in the world. Eno has contributed to some of the most critically and commercially successful albums in recent history. This includes U2's 'The Joshua Tree' and 'Achtung Baby', and Talking Heads' 'Fear of Music'. Contrary to popular belief, he did not produce David Bowie's "Berlin Trilogy" of 'Low', 'Heroes' and 'Lodger' - which were produced by Tony Visconti.

Coldplay are due to premiere new material from the as yet untitled album in a number of performances next month.

Oscar Nominations

The nominations for next month's 79th Academy Awards were announced yesterday. If Morrissey is successful in his bid to represent the UK, this could well mark a significant departure from the cheesy dance/pop that Eurovision is equally loved and derided for. It may turn out that last year's winners Lordi (a Finnish heavy metal band) have been a catalyst for change, by expanding the musical horizons of the 50 year old contest.

UK singles chart revolution

This Sunday's UK singles chart marks an historic shift in how the chart is compiled. From Sunday 7th, literally any song bought from an online store has the potential to be a No. 1 single - even if it is not planned for a physical single release.

This means that even an obscure album track from 30 years ago could end up at the top of the singles chart, provided it sells enough copies in a given week. Up until now, for download sales to count, a song had to also be released in offline music stores.

It remains to be seen whether this will benefit established artists or up and coming stars, but it seems certain that this will alter our perception of what a No. 1 single is - and what it can be.

Take That!

Cliff Richard's tenth Christmas single "21st Century Christmas" has been held off the top spot of the UK singles chart by Take That's comeback single "Patience", which has now been at No. 1 for a month.

The band were put together in 1997 by Bob & Chris Herbert, who had previously formed the Spice Girls. After selling nearly 20 million records worldwide over a four year period, Five split up in 2001.

Five announced their return on Wednesday 27th September 2006. They will be returning as a four-piece, without Sean Conlon (who is pursuing a solo career), but will not be changing the name of the group to reflect this. The band have denied reports that the reunion is money related, stating they just want "another crack at the madness".

Russell Watson recovers from brain surgery

The multi-million selling opera singer Russell Watson is successfully recovering from an emergency five hour operation to remove a brain tumour that could have potentially damaged his eyesight.

Diddy' or more recently just 'Diddy' has lost the right to use his new moniker in the UK.
After Combs changed his stage name to Diddy last year, UK producer Richard 'Diddy' Dearlove launched legal action claiming that the name change had caused confusion between the two artists. Combs has consequently agreed in an out-of-court settlement to cease using the 'Diddy' name in the UK.

Lloyd Webber hopes to renew public interest in musicals by using an 'X-Factor' / 'Pop Idol' style talent hunt for an unknown performer to take the role of Maria Von Trapp.

This evening the 10 finalists will be revealed (whittled down from 50 hopefuls), from which the public get the chance to vote for their favourite Von Trapp, so the final choice of the leading lady will be decided by the show's viewers. The production will hit the West End in October, at the London Palladium.

How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? airs on BBC ONE at 6.50pm and 9.25pm on Saturdays.

Some Great New Titles...

We have recently added some truly wonderful new titles to Sheetmusicdirect.com. You can now download audio backing tracks and video lessons, as well as digital sheet music.
The audio backing tracks are high quality, professionally recorded versions of popular songs, with the lead instrument and vocals removed. We currently have three arrangements available, for Voice, Guitar, and Piano. This puts your performance at the centre of your practice sessions. Where available, you can even buy the associated sheet music and video lesson too, for a truly multimedia learning experience.
Our video lessons provide step-by-step analysis of popular songs by professional guitar tutors.
There are many other changes that have happened with this update, such as a new Charts page, where you can view the latest singles and albums charts, and go directly to the titles available on our site. The Accounts section has also been updated, so it is now much easier to see a list of the titles you have previously ordered, from Your Library.
If you have any comments on our new and improved site, please tell us, by emailing us at eu_support@sheetmusicdirect.com

Keane to see it...

Hurrah – the sheet music for the new Keane album, 'Under The Iron Sea' is now available for immediate download from Sheetmusicdirect.com, including the single Is It Any Wonder?.

Kylie Back On Tour

After recovering from surgery following her diagnosis with breast cancer, Kylie Minogue has announced that she is to resume her 'Showgirl' tour across Australia this November. For a long time, artists saw an appearance on Top Of The Pops as the watermark of success.

However, TOTP has suffered from low viewing figures in recent years. Its downfall essentially began in 1981 with the launch of MTV, the first dedicated music video channel. The weekly BBC show has since found it difficult to keep up with the competition from a multitude of 24 hour music channels.

The number one single in the week when Top Of The Pops launched was 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' by the Beatles. Who'll be number one when it ends? The last show will be broadcast on Sunday 30 July, so we'll find out then.

Coca Cola's World Cup Advert

If you were wondering what the music used in the new Coca Cola World Cup TV commercial is, it's based on a JS Bach arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon, and is available on Sheetmusicdirect.com through the link below.

The Day of the Beast

Are you Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobic? You'll probably want to stay indoors and hide today then! (In case you're wondering, Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia is a fear of the number 666.) Today's date, 6/6/6 is the first time in 100 years that 666, or 'The number of the Beast' has lined up in our date system.

So why does the number 666 supposedly signify the 'Beast'? The exact meaning of the number is ambiguous, but the association with evil probably originated from the Christian New Testament's 'Book of Revelation'. Some believe it is directly equated with the Devil, and some believe that 666 was a coded number for a Roman emperor who persecuted Christians.

For those non-hexakosioihexekontahexaphobics out there, here are a few songs to pass the day with:

Elton John vampire musical bites (the dust)...

After only 39 performances on Broadway, Elton John's vampire musical, 'Lestat' will close this Sunday. The musical, based on novelist Anne Rice's vampire books, received a drubbing from critics upon opening last month, and has suffered from low audience turnouts since.

The title of the musical originates from the character 'Lestat de Lioncourt', who appears in several of Rice's vampire novels. This includes 'Interview with the Vampire', where Tom Cruise starred as Lestat in Neil Jordan's film adaptation.

Classical Brit Awards

The Classical Brit Awards take place tonight at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The awards were established in 2000 to recognise the achievements of classical musicians, and the success of classical music sales in the UK. The awards ceremony has since become one of the most important classical music events of the year.

This year Placido Domingo will be performing, and will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for a career spanning seven decades. Nominees for other awards include Harry Gregson-Williams and John Williams for the Soundtrack/Musical Theatre Composer of the Year, and The Choirboys and Hayley Westenra for the Album of the Year Award.

The show will be broadcast in the UK at 4.30pm on Sunday 7th May, on ITV1.

Australian Dollars on Sheetmusicdirect.com

It is now possible to pay for your sheet music in five different currencies, with Australian Dollars being the latest addition to this choice.

Notorious for wild parties, throwing televisions out of windows, drugs convictions, and general
raucous behaviour - rock star habits usually tend to count against potential tenants.

However, Carlos Boozer (a basketball player with the NBA), apparently ignored this instinct and
decided to rent his luxury Hollywood mansion to eighties rock star Prince for $70,000 a month.

Just four months after this, Mr Boozer had filed Prince with a lawsuit, alleging that he had
violated the terms of the lease by making unauthorised alterations to the property.
The alterations made by the artist now known as Prince included:

* Painting the exterior of the premises with purple striping, a Prince symbol,
and the numbers ‘3121’ (the name of his new album).
* Removing carpets and replacing them with black carpets.
* Replacing the carpet in the master bedroom with purple carpet (with a Prince symbol on it).

* Installing new plumbing for a beauty salon, and “cutting a large hole in [the] wall”

Apparently these changes may have been to do with preparing the property for an intimate
live performance; we presume it wasn’t to do with winning any ideal home awards! The $25,000
lawsuit has subsequently been withdrawn, after it emerged that the landlord had accepted
rental payments after the lawsuit was filed.

Ground Control to Major ... 'Good Day Sunshine' was played to NASA's Discovery crew in August this year, to mark the favourable weather conditions on the day that they successfully descended to earth.

John Peel Day

Thursday 13th October was John Peel Day, as bands across the country (and the world) remembered perhaps the best DJ ever to have graced this planet. Peel was renowned for his passion for all kinds of music, and his championing of new artists and talent, without any regard for playlisting or whether most of these artists would ever sell any records.
Below are just a few of the artists championed by John Peel (and of course his favourite track 'Teenage Kicks'):

Craig, Daniel Craig (007)

Little known British actor Daniel Craig (Layer Cake, Tomb Raider) has been chosen to take over the reins from Pierce Brosnan as the next James Bond. The next Bond film is to be an adaptation of Ian Fleming's first Bond novel 'Casino Royale', and is said to be taking a 'grittier' approach than recent Bond films.

The new 'Casino Royale' should not be confused with the 1967 spoof Bond film (also based on the book), starring David Niven and Peter Sellers, and soundtracked by Burt Bacharach.

Bookmakers have upgraded their odds of winning from 66-1 to 7-1. Geldof has already been nominated once before for his work in organising the first Live Aid concert in 1986.

However, they are up against tough competition, with Martti Ahtisaari, who negotiated to end fighting in the Balkans, and helped bring Namibia its first free elections, tipped as 4-1 favourite to win.
